May 22, 2010. A day that will live in infamy not for political upheaval or monumental scientific breakthroughs, but for pizza. On this fateful day, Florida resident Laszlo Hanyecz made what is now known as the most expensive food order in history. Hanyecz spent 10,000 BTC to purchase two Papa John's pizzas. Yes, you read that right—10,000 BTC for two large pizzas. At today's writing, that would be around $700 million, or nearly half of Papa John's entire market cap. Hanyecz’s order is celebrated as the first commercial transaction using Bitcoin, setting a precedent for the cryptocurrency's utility.
Below is a screenshot of Laszlo's post "Pizza for bitcoins?"
While the story of Hanyecz’s legendary pizza purchase is well-known, what's less talked about is his other contributions to Bitcoin. Hanyecz was something of a Bitcoin Renaissance man, a confidant to Satoshi Nakamoto, and the first to port Bitcoin’s code to Apple’s operating system. This move allowed a greater number of people to run Bitcoin software on their Macs, opening up the ecosystem to even more participants. But let’s face it, no one cares about that on Bitcoin Pizza Day. It's all about the 'za.
And of course it wouldn't be a day in the Solana memecoin space without all the Pump Fun projects popping up like pepperoni on a Prince St. pizza slice hoping to capitalize on the trend. The likes of "Nigi Wif Pizza," "Pizzachu," "Pizza Nut," "Solana Rolls," and many others have been making their way to the front page of the popular Solana memecoin platform that has recently been the center of debate in the space.
While the rest of us might bemoan spending millions on pizza, Hanyecz remains unfazed. “Someone had to start it,” he says. He views his purchase as a necessary step in proving Bitcoin’s viability as a real-world currency. And let’s be honest, without his pioneering spirit (and pizza craving), who knows if Bitcoin would have become the juggernaut it is today?
So, as we celebrate Bitcoin Pizza Day, let’s raise a slice to Laszlo Hanyecz. He turned Bitcoin from a nerdy novelty into a currency with real-world value. And in doing so, he gave us a story that will forever be part of crypto lore. Whether you’re a Bitcoin maxi, can't afford it, or just someone who loves a good slice, today we can all appreciate the blend of innovation, risk, and a touch of insanity that makes the world of cryptocurrency so endlessly fascinating.
